Hello dear reader,
Earlier this week, I wrote about Setting Clear Boundaries in your business, boundaries with clients, with yourself and in other areas too. (Two blog posts in one week, who even am I?!😅)
The reaction was bigger than I had anticipated...
I had a lot of people get in touch and share their experiences with me.
And I hadn't planned on writing about maintaining and resetting boundaries for a few weeks but,
I Was Inspired By Those Conversations.
They showed me that we all experience boundary issues in our businesses and that often, we can feel like we are the only ones going through it.
I've realised that this is an area that we don't talk about half enough so, today we're going to have a look at resetting and maintaining boundaries.
I'm going to share my experience with you too because I think it's important that we open this conversation up.
In an earlier post I touched on how crazy September was for me.
It was. Along with all the usual stuff, I ended up in a work situation that was a hell of a lot less than ideal.
🟡 I was stressed out;
🟡 My stress was stressing my Husband out;
🟡 I was pulling all nighters - Something I had promised myself I would never do;
🟡 I cancelled an important personal appointment and skipped out on plans to work on this project;
🟡 I was even starting to feel physically unwell.
Pretty much everything that I do my best to avoid in my business was happening.
I felt helpless and totally out of my depth...
So, I reached out to two of my best business friends to see what they thought -
"Was I making too much of it?!".
"Should I just soldier on?".
Reaching out was the best thing that I ever did.
Talking to my business besties helped me to realise that I wasn't making too much of it.
I was reminded that this is my business and that I had options here.
It took me a couple of weeks to fully recover from it.
It took me longer to process it but what I eventually realised was that I had let my boundaries slide.
Boundaries are a way for us to take care of ourselves, and I was most certainly not doing that!
By letting my boundaries slide I had unexpectedly and unintentionally invited a less than ideal situation into my business and my life.
We're only human, boundaries slip from time to time.
We can't be constantly switched on detecting breaches.
All we can do once we find that we have let our boundaries slide is - Reflect, Reset & Maintain
Be Kind To Yourself
First and foremost, show yourself some kindness.
⭐️ Make sure to rest;
⭐️ Don't beat yourself up!
⭐️ Treat yourself.
At the end of the day, we're all just human beings trying our best!!
At times it might be necessary to reset our boundaries.
Whether that be with Clients, with ourselves or in other areas.
You'll know it's time to reset if you feel that your 'buttons' are being pushed or if you're feeling stressed or irritable quite often.
⭐️ Take the time to reflect on your boundaries and why they are important to you;
⭐️ Take note of your non-negotiables;
⭐️ Start living by the boundaries that you set yourself;
⭐️ Do you need to have some conversations? - Depending on your situation, it may be necessary to reset your boundaries verbally.
As human beings we are boundary pushers, in both good and bad ways!
If you find that someone is pushing your boundaries, take note of it but continue to live by the boundaries that you have set for yourself.
They'll soon get the picture that you're not budging!!
If they don't, it might be time to consider your options and you DO have options, this is YOUR business.
One of the biggest things that helped me, was reaching out.
I've talked before about how important community is as a Business Owner and this is just another reason as to why!
Since, I've taken stock and realised what's important to me when it comes to my own boundaries. I've reset and made quite a few changes too.
It was definitely a learning experience and ultimately, I'm grateful for those learnings, even if it was incredibly uncomfortable at the time!
We're always learning and growing as Business Owners, figuring it out step by step and challenge by challenge.
Until next time,
