The Virtual Life: Is A Career As A VA Right For Me?

You've heard the term 'Virtual Assistant' and you are intrigued!

What is this career and would it be the right fit for ME?

Let’s start with the definition of a Virtual Assistant (VA)!

According to Google, a Virtual Assistant is:

"Generally self-employed and provides professional administrative, technical, or creative assistance to clients remotely from a home office".

The Virtual Assistant industry has been going strong in the US and the UK for some years now. It is only recently that the industry has really begun to grow in Ireland and some other parts of Europe.

Let's go through some of the perks of the job and also some of the things that people don't tell you, to help you decide if a career as a Virtual Assistant is right for you!

The Perks!

Being your own Boss

Being your own boss can feel liberating and adds extra flexibility to your life.

It also means that your career progression is completely uncapped.

Working From Home

Are you someone who hates the hamster wheel feeling of commuting into and out of the office all week? (I certainly was!).

There are many different reasons that you might want to work from home. From childcare to better work/life balance.

Whatever your why, it is pretty great and one of the biggest reasons that Virtual Assistant's love their jobs.

You Set Your Own Rates

Remember the nervous feeling in your stomach when you were about to ask your Boss for more money, that you deserved?!

Well, no more! Virtual Assistant's decide and set their own rates.

You Can Work From Anywhere

Generally, all you need is wifi and your laptop. So you REALLY CAN work from anywhere!

You Can Wear Whatever You Want

No more hobbling around the office in a pair of heels that look great but you can't walk in!

You Never Stop Learning

As a VA you can end up working with a wide variety of people in different industries, which means you constantly learn new skills!

What they don't tell you:

You Have To Market Yourself, Constantly

As a virtual business, you need to market yourself virtually. So, that means social media!

Social media moves fast and there are some amazing content creators out there, so you need to be on the ball.

If you disappear for a few weeks, there are others there that will take your spot!

It's hard work!

You might be working in your home office without a Boss looking over your shoulder but that doesn't mean you can slack off.

As a VA, your reputation is everything and that means that we work hard to keep our Clients happy and deliver the best work possible.

You Have To Do It All

From your actual Client work to your own accounting, marketing, admin and IT.

If one of these areas isn't your strongest, it may be a good idea to make a plan on ow you are going to deal with that, so as to avoid any future problems.

You Don't Get Paid For Holiday Or Sick Days

Something that can be a bit strange in the beginning and requires adjustment!

Like when you make any decision, it's important to weigh up the pros and cons!

Before I started my VA business, I worked in Law.

I hauled myself in and out of the city every day and I genuinely felt like I was living to work!

Since I started my business, I have realised that, that lifestyle just wasn't for me!!

Working as a VA has given me the flexibility that I always craved and the opportunity to keep learning and moving forward!
